SCAR REVISION
Scar Revision: Enhancing Skin Texture, Contour, and Confidence:
Scars, whether from injury, surgery, or acne, can significantly impact our confidence. At the Dermatology Institute of Detroit, we understand first-hand the emotional toll scars can take, which is why we offer scar revision techniques and treatments to help restore skin texture, color, contour, and improve overall appearance so you can feel better about the skin you are in!
Understanding Scar Formation:
Scars develop as part of the body's natural healing process in response to injury or surgery on the skin. While scars are inevitable, their appearance can vary widely depending on factors such as wound depth, location, surgical technique, and individual genetic characteristics. While most scars fade over time, some scars can become raised and hypertrophic, others can be sunken or discolored, and few can become stubborn keloid scars which often need a combination of treatments.
Surgical Dermatologic Solutions:
We specialize in scar revision techniques aimed at improving the overall appearance of scars. These include:
1. Non-Invasive Treatments:
For some scars, such as those resulting from acne, surgery, or minor injuries, we may recommend topical treatments such as silicone gels, corticosteroids injections, or focused chemical peels to help improve scar characteristics.
2. Surgical Excision:
In cases of prominent or extensive scars, surgical excision may be necessary to remove the scar tissue and close the wound with meticulous precision. This technique is particularly beneficial for raised, hypertrophic scars, or webbed scars and allows for optimal wound healing and scar remodeling.
3. Subcision:
Subcision is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to improve the appearance of depressed or sunken scars, such as those caused by acne. During the procedure, a small needle or blade is inserted beneath the scar tissue to release the underlying fibrous bands that tether the skin, allowing the skin to rise and smooth out.
Mutidisciplinary Care:
Every scar requires an individual treatment plan which doesn’t always include surgery. Some scar characteristics, like redness, are better addressed with laser therapy. Certain scar types, such as keloids, sometimes require local skin radiation to prevent recurrence. We work closely with a laser experts and radiation oncologists in the community to tailor the best possible revision approach for your scar.
Scar revision at the Dermatology Institute of Detroit offers transformative results and renewed confidence for individuals seeking to improve the appearance of their scars. Whether you're bothered by acne scars, surgical scars, or traumatic scars, our dermatologic techniques can help restore skin smoothness and texture, allowing you to embrace your skin with confidence.
